We have many different electives at Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskolen. Here the focus is not on physical activity, but rather in-depth teaching in different themes. You have electives once a week, and one in each period, so you choose two electives in total.
We take a practical approach so that you gain a broad understanding of the subject you have chosen. The subjects give you the opportunity to delve deeper, be academically challenged and develop new skills in a committed teaching environment. Please note that not all of our subjects are offered in every class.
Board game
Board games are more than just entertainment. In this subject, we explore what board games can do for both socializing and ourselves. Different game mechanics, systems and rules all have an impact on how the game develops, and in the subject, we look into how the different games can provide insight into our decision-making, communication and problem-solving.
Dive into both new and familiar board games
In recent years, board games have made a comeback. Approximately 400 new board games are published annually, and game sales are increasing. Board game cafes and board game stores are opening in large cities, and both seem to be a success. The growing fascination with the world of board games tells of a cultural and social phenomenon, in which it can be seen that board games are not only a cozy game Partners, but also a powerful learning and communication tool. Games such as Blood on the clock tower, Dominion, Pandemic and many others challenge both cognitive abilities, cooperation and strategic thinking, and teach us a lot about ourselves and each other.
In the subject, we work analytically and practically with different types of board games. We test both new and well-known games, and in doing so, we try to answer:
What do we get from playing board games?
Can the games stay different?
In the subject, we will look more closely at these questions, try a lot of different games and talk about what the different games can do, who the games appeal to, what we can learn from the games, and why a board game cafe is the perfect place to get to know each other.

Sustainability
In the elective Sustainability course at Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole, we delve into the most current issues right now. We examine climate, green transition, energy consumption, transportation, agriculture, food and consumer habits — and we look at how the choices we make in everyday life are connected to the world we are a part of.
Learn more about what sustainability means to a certain extent.
In this elective course, we try to learn more about what sustainability is and what role we can play in sustainable development.
We will discuss green transition and investigate new initiatives and opportunities within the area. We will do this by investigating both global and completely local initiatives. Among other things, we will work with transport and energy supply, where sustainable initiatives have been and are still being taken, as well as with agriculture and food. We will look at the solutions and whether they are sustainable for the average Dane. What will it mean for our diet to live more sustainably, and are we willing to give up meat in large quantities and various materialistic goods? And is it even the right way to go? We will address and discuss many of these aspects, so that we can make each other smarter about how we should look at our energy consumption, climate and sustainability in the future.
The teaching in the subject will often be group-based with a focus on investigating and discussing sustainable initiatives. In addition, there will be work on finding and implementing smaller sustainability initiatives at school or in areas that require climate action. You will also be faced with very low-level practical tasks that are about what we ourselves can do if the planet is to have a chance.

History of Denmark
In this elective course we delve into the major events and periods that have shaped Denmark.
HOW DID DENMARK BECOME THE COUNTRY WE KNOW TODAY?
In this elective course, we delve into the major events and periods that have shaped Denmark – from the first settlers in the Stone Age and the Viking raids to the Reformation, the introduction of democracy and Denmark's role during World War II.
We take as our starting point both national history and local stories from North Jutland. Therefore, we will not only read about the past, but also experience it up close through museum visits, trips to historical sites and working with sources and stories.
The teaching combines presentations, discussions, film clips, group work and excursions. We follow history chronologically and examine how past choices and events still shape our society and identity today.
Please note that not all electives are created and/or offered in all classes.
That's funny
Why does it feel great to laugh, but embarrassing to be asked to? Where is the line between fun and too much? And do you dare to make a fool of yourself if you know it will make others laugh?
WHAT ARE YOU REALLY LAUGHING ABOUT – AND WHY?
In Det' svøv, we delve into the world of humor and examine what laughter does to us – both physically, mentally and socially. We look at what we laugh at in films, memes, stand-up and on TikTok, and focus on irony, black humor and satire. What is okay to laugh at – and what is not?
You will also have the chance to experiment with humor yourself: create funny formats, do silly social experiments, and explore what happens when we dare to let go.
In short: A subject for those who want to learn more about fun – and maybe even find the courage to be one themselves.”

Film & media corner
In this elective, we work with media and delve into the tools that are often used. We will look at it in context and analyze films from a historical and societal perspective.
JUMP INTO THE WORLD OF MEDIA
The subject is based on both the world of fiction and/or the real world and attempts, through encounters with different genres, to open up dialogue and discussion. Both historical and current social themes are addressed here. Through film and various spoken and written media, we attempt to debate the reality of which we ourselves are a part. We have previously worked with the film "Under the Sand" and in this connection the links between the dilemmas of the past and the present.
In addition, we also work with the tools often used in films and videos. These can include music, camera angles, editing techniques, images, voiceover and a host of other media effects.
You do not need to have an in-depth knowledge of media studies, but simply be interested in film and media. Everyone is welcome to join in when the discussion covers all of the above topics.
Anders, who teaches the subject, is a passionate film nerd who loves everything from magnificent nature films with narration from David Attenborough to Danish historical dramas. So you never know what you'll be presented with, but you can certainly look forward to an unpredictable elective where you really get to geek out about film and media.

Sex, Body and Love
The subject is about our bodies, our gender and identity, and about love and relationships with other people. These have always been themes that are important to us humans.
EXAMPLES OF CONTENT
- How can you flirt and score today? It feels like a minefield.
- Body issues: Do others also have insecurities or shame about their bodies? How does it affect us, for example, in sports or during sex?
- I feel trapped by the expectations that are placed on me because I am a man.
- Am I wrong if I don't feel like it?
- Can I say “I love you” to my boyfriend? Why is it difficult?
- I don't quite understand all this stuff about different genders. How can I navigate it?
- How do I feel my desires and my limits? And how do I communicate them?
In our world today, there is a breakup and dissolution of many norms and expectations, and more is up for negotiation and interpretation for each of us individually. It can feel liberating, meaningful and joyful. But it can also feel confusing, paralyzing or like great pressure to perform.
The students in the subject greatly influence which areas we investigate. Because it should be about exactly what is most relevant and exciting. We give ourselves time in a safe atmosphere to delve into nuances, be curious and open to learning.
The form of the subject is conversations, games, exercises, starting points in films and music, and perhaps we invite a person to visit who can give us an understanding of a new perspective. In the conversation there must be room for different thoughts, feelings, uncertainty, humor and attitudes. Everyone can participate, and all perspectives are important.

Life stories
Every day we continue to write our life story. It is not just a summary of everything we have experienced, but a way of understanding ourselves and our journey through life.
UNDERSTANDING LIFE THROUGH STORIES
In the subject Life Stories, we delve into how we tell our own story – and how we listen to others'.
Life as a story
We humans think in stories. We remember not just what happened, but why it happened and what it meant to us. When we talk to others about our lives, we create coherence and meaning in what we have experienced. Some events stand out clearly as turning points – moments when something changed, when we took a new direction, or when we understood ourselves in a new way.
Working with life stories is not only about looking back, but also about understanding how we develop throughout our lives. Who were we once? Who are we now? And who do we want to be?
To talk about life
In the lessons we work with conversations – both about our own lives and about others. When we listen to each other's stories, we discover that we are not alone in our experiences. We learn to see the world from the perspective of others and discover how different experiences shape the way we see ourselves and life.
Through lifelines and stories, we practice understanding both our own and others' development. We reflect on the choices we have made, the people we have met, and the experiences that have made us who we are today.
How do we create meaning in life?
Writing your life story is not just retelling the past – it is also a way to give meaning to life. When we put our experiences into words, we see patterns and connections we may not have noticed before.
But life stories are not fixed – we can always write new chapters. We can change our perspective on our past, and we can shape our future. By sharing our stories and being open to others’ stories, we not only learn more about life – we also learn to live it better.
So if you are curious about yourself and others, if you would like to better understand people's stories and life choices, then Life Stories is a subject that can give you both insight and inspiration.

Politics and Society
Danish politics has suffered from a great deal of distrust from voters and society over the past many years. In fact, politicians are one of the professional groups that we in society trust the least. But why has it become like this?
POSSIBLE TOPICS WE SHOULD DISCUSS:
- Structure of the election in DK vs. e.g. USA
- Political trends
- The opportunities and challenges of globalization
- Private and public economics
- Citizen's obligations
- Politicians
BECOME SMARTER IN THIS WORLD
WE LIVE IN
That's just one of the questions we ask in the elective Politics & Society. We will also learn more about how Danish society is structured and whether it can be improved. We look out into the world and see how other countries are handling similar issues in the EU and globally.
You are allowed to express your opinions and through objective discussion we can learn more about each other. It is precisely the fact that you have the right to your own opinion that makes democracy unique. The difficult thing about democracy is to accept all these different opinions.
In Politics and Society we will also try to lift politics and society to a higher level and look at it from the top down. We will try to create an overview of the political landscape and find out why politicians do what they do, and what they should possibly do instead. We will also try to learn more about what it means to be; an active citizen.
Please note that not all electives are created and/or offered in all classes.
Social Media and Society
Are you aware of how trends, likes and AI algorithms on social media affect both you and the community you are a part of?
EXAMPLES OF CONTENT
- The role of social media in society
- TikTok as a trendsetter
- Algorithms, AI and the “tailored feed”
- Scandals, digital culture and cancel culture
- Morality, ethics and responsibility on the internet
- Target groups, profiling and NIH as a concrete case
WHAT IMPACT DOES SOCIAL MEDIA HAVE ON US AND THE WORLD WE LIVE IN?
In SoMe and Society, we go behind the scenes of social media and examine how platforms like TikTok, Instagram and so on affect our everyday lives, culture and communities. You will learn how algorithms, AI and tools control the content you encounter and why social media can be so hard to let go of.
Along the way, we will use NIH's own channels as an example, and you will have the opportunity to come up with ideas for how the school can communicate even more clearly on social media.
Please note that not all electives are created and/or offered in all classes.
Sports and Ethics
In the elective Sport and Ethics, we examine the world of sport from the inside out, and try to gain insight into some of the issues that arise when the consequences of sport find their way into the 'real world'.
TRY YOURSELF WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT BALL GAMES
Over time, there have been many sporting decisions that have made Danish living rooms talk. Did Lance Armstrong really dope? If so, was it OK that he was stripped of his Tour De France victories? Is it fair that modern world records in running are run with an electronic laser as a pacemaker? And in which category should trans athletes actually compete?
In Sport and Ethics we discuss such questions about the world of sport, and try to get closer to a consensus about what is allowed and what is not allowed. How we want professionals and amateurs to act, and what consequences should be imposed on athletes. Among the general topics could be, for example; cheating, hooliganism and fan culture, doping, technological improvement and the roles of children in elite sport.
The teaching will primarily be group-based, where individual participants will have the opportunity to work on a topic that they themselves find interesting. We will watch documentaries with historical insight, and we will look through the news continuously, getting to work on highly topical topics if these arise.
Please note that not all electives are created and/or offered in all classes.
The world seen from above
Is the profession that tries to question “normal”. Why is everything in our society becoming more and more stringent – and why is it so easy to fall outside “normal”, and perhaps even more importantly; what is normal?
EXAMPLES OF CONTENT
- The fourth estate
- Zlatan – crazy or brilliant?
- The musical rebellion of the 70s
- Who defines right and wrong – Language (e.g. Negro)
- Russia's role in the international community
- What does the term “open minded” mean?
- Danish Liberalism – Against the Rest of the World
ZOOM OUT – AND SEE THE WORLD FROM ABOVE
We examine and discuss different norms and values in society and look at, among other things, what role music and sports have played for our time in relation to our fixed understandings of society's norms. By looking at the world from a "helicopter perspective", hopefully new and exciting angles open up that can contribute to nuanced views of our different perceptions.
