Overview of other information about NIH
Here you will find practical and supplementary information about Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole, including values, student association, annual plan and guidance in connection with your stay.
Guidance efforts at NIH
At Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole you are offered guidance in choosing higher education, choosing upper secondary education, or we guide you in connection with job searching. In the first week of your stay at the college, you will speak with a teacher at the school, where we will, among other things, talk about your educational background, your future plans and your expectations for your stay at the college. Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole offers comprehensive guidance to the college's students. The guidance is linked to three conditions:
Conversations
All students have a mandatory interview with a contact teacher at the beginning of their stay. This interview is mainly about aligning expectations and getting the student and the school ready so that the student's learning opportunities are optimized. This can be about any special prerequisites and about organizing college life in light of the goals the student may have. This interview may be followed up by other mandatory interviews. Mandatory interviews are also held in the student's room. This is done to strengthen the student's social skills.
Themes and study groups are offered, which aim to create as much clarity as possible for the student. We work on goal setting and follow-up, specific study and career guidance, and finally, students are offered the opportunity to prepare for their future student life.
Informal guidance
The teachers' working hours are such that there is plenty of time for students to request conversations, and teachers can also easily take initiatives for such. All conceivable existential and concrete challenges are discussed here.
It is part of the guidance concept that students have a contact person; but it is often more natural to discuss questions with a teacher with whom you have a good personal or professional contact.
We also offer a course we call “The Way Forward”. It prepares you for your upcoming education, including study preparation and application writing. This is also aimed at those of you who want to strengthen your quota 2 application.
On the way to education
If you are one of the young people who did not start or complete a youth education, there is good news. At NIH, we have an offer for you to start over. The state has established some schemes that allow you to get a nice subsidy for your stay at a college.
Mentor student at Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole
North Jutland University of Sports participates in the mentoring project, so that students without upper secondary education can get extra help and prepare to return to school. The prerequisite is that this is written into the student's educational plan. For example, the UU supervisor can write that "I recommend that NN participates as a student at Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole with an associated mentor". The mentor student has the same guidance discussions and opportunities as all other students, but in addition a mentoring agreement is drawn up between the student and mentor. This agreement seeks to make it clear which challenges the student will work on, and how to work. The agreement states how often more formal meetings will be held, and also how the student and mentor have agreed on a more daily follow-up
All mentors at NIH have completed a mentoring course, and typically a teacher has 1 or 2 mentor students.
The support circle
We are a group of active members who organize a wide range of different cultural events in support of Nordjylland Idrætshøjskole.
A look back
The Support Circle for NIH was established in 1976 with the main purpose of establishing a sports college in Brønderslev. The school was established in 1986 and is therefore a young and modern college. An important prerequisite for the establishment was that broad popular support for the project could be documented. This was fully successful. The association gained approximately 1.000 paying members, and several provided additional support in the form of purchasing bonds. These bonds were later repaid by the school. The Support Circle for NIH continues to be a significant factor in the school's background, as it holds 7 seats on the school's board of representatives and 2 seats on the school's board. There are currently 450 members of the Support Circle. Click here to read more about The NIH support group.
Student Association
The Student Association at Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole is an association for former students and employees at NIH. The association's board consists of former students who organize a lot of different, cool events, especially at NIH for former students. As a member of the NIH Student Association, you have the opportunity to participate in all the student association's events, such as reunion weekends and local sports events.
On student association Facebook page You have the opportunity to see who we are and what we work with. This is also where you become a member of the Student Association, register for student weekends and student meetings, change your address and apply for grants from our sports fund.

Folk high school/ Sports college/ Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole
Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole is part of the Danish folk high schools. This means, among other things, that the school is obliged to comply with the rules of the Folk High Schools Act, and that the Danish state supports the college.
The Folk High School Act has a main objective that all folk high schools are obliged to achieve. This main objective is that the folk high school should provide life education, popular education and democratic education. Finally, one must not misunderstand the word “education”. It is not that the folk high school should inform the students about something specific. On the contrary, education, in this context, is about shedding light on the life we live. Here, teachers and students can be equal, and one person’s opinion is not more valuable than the other’s. Life enlightenment is about trying to understand the fundamental themes of a human life. What elements are included in our lives from birth to death? Popular enlightenment is a sub-element of life enlightenment. We live in different popular contexts, both here and now and historically. If we do not understand contexts, we always start from scratch and risk making old mistakes. Democratic education is a subset of popular education. We live in a democratic country, and we must ensure that we maintain this together. College is about being an adult. College is a free space where we together form ourselves to act in the world we live in, alone and together with others. Therefore, college must live up to the old saying that you never get further than you dreamed of in your youth. At Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole, this permeates everyday life and teaching.
